hi! got a bunch of asks abt merch stuff lately im gonna put it under a cut.

preface: i don't know if i'm the best person to ask about all this stuff because I'm doing merch on a strictly hobby basis LOL. I have a fulltime job which takes care of the bulk of my finances, I don't really make big quantities of anything and my main priority at cons is to just make enough money to see my friends in different cities at minimal expense. i pretty much always get a refund when i file my con taxes because my profit after all the deductions is like fucking..nothing.. lmao. So if you ultimately lose money following my advice don't blame me. OK NOW lets get into it

my process for making merch: when I have an event scheduled that I want to make merch for I start by brainstorming a bunch of stuff I wanna make. for mgscon this is what I wrote down in my sketchbook lol

i made a legend to denote which ones are actually just reprints. it gets easier to plan out merch when you already have merch. out of the new merch ideas here i actually only made like 4 of them. and out of the reprints i only reprinted like three. i also came up with like 4-5 other merch ideas after writing out this list that i actually did do. LMAOO UM. my point here is that nothing rly goes as planned.

when i get a merch idea i start with thumbnails what i want it to look like (sometimes this is based off merch ive seen before so its very realized and sometimes its really vague bc im kind of pulling it out of my ass)

then BEFORE i go into making the final art I research how I'm going to make the merch. whether its printing/constructing it myself or looking for a manufacturer. There's a lot of different places that you can get custom merch made, i used to go shopping around at local printing shops but nowadays it's really common to do it all online. For both these jet tags and the washi tape I did some of my own research into manufacturers and also asked friends for their contacts/referrals/recommendations etc. most manufacturers either have their specs/template publicly available or will give them to you when you ask. so once I've locked into a manu and gotten the specs I'll start designing the final art.

then it's sending it off and waiting! easier said than done.

i will say this process is a lot lengthier for some types of merch than others LOL. for prints... I've been doing prints for like a million years and I plan out almost none of it. I draw everything at print resolution so a week before I have a con scheduled I'll simply go through all the files I've accumulated since my last con, squeeze whatever drawings I want into standard print sizes lol (ie. 8.5x11, 11x17, 4x6 etc), and print them at a local shop. takes like a couple hours max.

how you know which franchises you can make merch for w/o getting into trouble w copyright n trademark stuff?

I mean. honestly I don't know. selling fanart is the kind of thing that IP holders kind of just let slide as long as they don't think they're losing a substantial amt of money on it. there ARE a couple franchises people avoid because they've been known to send IP lawyers after fanartists... disney is the big one and they're known for being pretty petty abt it... that's why you don't really see people selling fanart of the disney princesses at cons. ive heard pokemon will also crack down if your project seems to be making a lot of money lol, part of why i think a lot of pokemon fanzines operate on a charity basis. I do feel like the pokemon company has bigger fish to fry than someones artist alley table though so i wouldn't sweat it too much.

it's also generally considered impolite/bad taste to sell fanart of small franchises. webcomics and indie games especially if they only have like 1-2 devs who rely on the income that game makes.

I'm not a lawyer so you shouldn't consider this legal advice BUT I will say... I don't think you should let IP law stop you from selling fanart lol. especially if it's low quantities/not mass produced and you're not making crazy amts of money I think you kind of have a leg to stand on. Besides, most cases it seems like the worst you'll get is a cease and desist.

you Will notice that when people start turning their artist alley endeavors into a real business they'll generally ease up on selling fanart (the case most prominent in my mind is omocat lol). but i love fanart and thats why i will never make money and thats a promise [snake saluting gif]

SORRY IDK IF ANY OF THIS WAS HELPFUL. I've been doing merch and cons for a long time (10+ years lmao, you can find record of this on this very blog) and i think im kind of old fashioned about it. i recognize the artist alley/merch scene is a lot more demanding now than it used to be but start small at local low-risk events, online sales etc and work your way up and remember to have fun and itll be ok i believe this wholeheartedly.

its literally just layers of acrylic like any other dinky charm. I'm sure pretty much any manu that does acrylic charms could do it but this specific charm/template i did order through a group order server. they're pretty well known! heres a link to their twitter

these ones i ordered thru an alibaba manu because I was jumping on a friend's group order to save on shipping. it was ok. they arrived a liiiitle late and printed a lil dark but i think thats kind of my fault LOL I use dark colors i always need to lighten things before i get them printed and i think i just didnt lighten these enough. otherwise i rly love the quality!

i realized i never posted these online and also this is not a good picture (the lighting in my living room sucks rn) but i printed these tmnt stickers thru stickerninja they feel really solid but they needed kind of a lot of space for the cutline. but their customer service was very nice and helpful!

these ones i got printed at washimill and i was so impressed with how fine their cutline is... pricing and quality of the sticker itself is alright they feel a lil flimsy? idk. but i do like the printing. i kind of elected to go with them solely because i was already ordering washi tape. A LOT of my manufacturing decisions are made based on how much money i can save on shipping tbh.

and thats my sticker manu reviews dont forget to like comment subscribe idk if i have one im gonna stick with forever or anything im rly indecisive. ideally id like a manu based in the u.s...? because im based in the u.s. and international shipping is pricey. but idk if i keep ordering washi tape maybe ill keep using washimill. who knows...

End of October Update

There's got to be a less clunky way for me to title these things but maybe I'll figure it out after a few posts.

Anyway at the top of the order I want to say that uh... the Abacelsus zine is not happening by halloween unforch.. I just started school part-time and it being part-time is still kicking my ass! So tentative release date will be on 11th November unless something else happens....

On the plus side I'm done with the cover so all that's left is the back page and cramming all 24 pages full of drawings 👍

I'm still deciding on whether i want to print it A5 or B5 but I'm leaning towards A5, though for the digital release it doesn't really matter lol

As mentioned, I'm done with the main cover so I just need to fill this entire thing with stuff, I said 24 pages but really the total page count is 30. I'm just not counting the cover and the blurb stuff.

I'm half taking a break with this at the risk of burning myself out and half paralysed with starting it. Plus I've kind of been more into Axl & I-no hilariously but I'll always love A.B.A. I think the lack of any real info really lends her well to interpretation which is always fun.

I've never really been one to engage in fandom so I'm probably going to be doing my own thing. That being said if anyone has any suggestions feel free to drop them in my strawpage or ask box :)

Sigh, like I mentioned earlier I'm doing school again! At my big age, but I'm having fun so far! It's part-time but it's still kicking my fucking ass! It's the main reason why I'm a little disoriented this month honestly.

Do you like it? I spent an entire Sunday making my class miro board look niceys and then proceeded to get nauseous from cybersickness afterwards LOL

I'm doing a UI/UX course and I have to say the funnest part about it is making personas, it's like making OCs. Don't particularly like writing though.. but also that's a lie considering the numerous amount of paragraphs in this blog post alone haha

I've also gotten confirmation that I'll be boothing again next year in Febuary! So I gotta start locking into making more stickers and general merch. I say this a lot but I do need to look into opening an online store because I just have tonnes of stickers and stuff lying around waiting till the next time I do a convention which is kind of a shame.

All in all, been kind of busy this month with school and various loose threads from September but overall I think I'm doing better! I've also been cooking lately and truthfully that's my biggest achievement this month haha, been also getting really into canned fish. Yummy!

Oh and a last thing is that I've been itching to animate again so I'll end this post with a WIP of a gif I did last night/morning. I almost always never finish my animations but here's hoping this one actually makes it to the colouring stage haha

okay so, to have a place for consolidated information for the next little bit, since i'm sure folks have QUESTIONS given my incredibly aggressive gallows humour

tldr ive been getting a number of recurrent small bowel obstructions located in my duodenum (first part of the small intestine, connecting the stomach to the rest of the bowel) due to external pressure on the duodenum around the 3rd to 4th (of 4) section. what's causing the pressure?? no clue actually ive done a bazillion scans and none of them have been quite clear enough for a real confident dx so i get to have surgery about it at some point in the near future

current theory is the pressure is from some sort of non-cancerous tumor mass and the plan is to cut me open nice and big, look about, and remove both this mass and the affected section of the duodenum (.5 of an organ) at a minimum, but may involve fully bipassing the duodenum when my guts get hooked back up to my stomach which could (would???) also require removing my gallbladder (1 and 2 organs respectively) (i'm having so much yanked out of my abdomen this summer jfc)

atm i'm still waiting for scheduling to give me a call to set things up. surgeon's estimate was 4-5 weeks from now (8/17 when he called). from that point i'll spend a week-ish in the hospital to make sure all hoses are firmly affixed, and then i'll have a month at a minimum before i'm reasonably healed and can go back to normal life

i have good insurance and the luck (????) of being incredibly ill at the best of times, so i've already hit my out of pocket max and thus this WHOLE THING even back dating to my first er visit end of june will cost a whopping 189$ that i've already paid. i also should qualify for my states paid medical leave and my wife will get a hefty chunk of change for living expenses via student loans. however, both those things won't hit until late september at the earliest

long term, im not expecting much of a financial burden, but short term we could use a hand with groceries and similar while we wait for my backpay and my wife's student loans

things ive been doing to keep me out of the er include: laying on my left side or stomach (The Digestion Position; helps get food past the squished part); eating a semi-liquid diet (hence ensure, jello, pudding, the like, though its important that i also eat solid food as much as is tolerated, which is such a delicate balance. this is why i cannot currently work); going on stupid little walks for my stupid digestive health (honestly the most important thing i can do, which im mad about, because it requires pants, but not only encourages guts to digest but also will help me not decondition, which i have already done a lot of :I)

things YOU can do to help (because i know *i* am a helper but also what is actually helpful??): financially with the above deets (no pressure); asks, comments, and other conversational interactions (i am absolutely chill with basically any kind of question and i dont mind dms if youd prefer privacy, just dont pedestal me i promise i am just A Dude); fanart for my fics (i do not care if you "cant draw" i will still love it); prompts for fandom but not necessarily fic projects (wardrobe moodboards/meta for characters, playlists/songs, smut writing how to questions, cosplay progress/plans qs, those "what was x's pov in this scene/what specifically happened between x and y in this fic?" qs andor other ask meme things idk dude i haven't been able to do shit for almost three months im booooored)

Hi Ani - I wonder do you have some resources or insights about collecting wildflower seeds? Particularly in bulk, and prepping them for distribution?

I ask because I've noticed that no-mow areas are becoming more common where I live, which is good, but since these are new projects what they amount to are areas of grass-but-taller. I have access to two properly wild abundance, and would like to propagate some of that in upcoming no-mow spaces.

I would like to preface this by making it clear that I've never collected wildflower seeds in bulk. Honestly, the most wildflower seed collecting I usually do year by year is collecting milkweed seed when I find the pods in time, in my own backyard. Every so often I'll try and teach myself how to collect seeds from other plants (I'm pretty confident with sunflowers, tithonia rotundifolia, and zinnias, I've tried black eyed susans before but never germinated any to test the success), but for the most part I've got my One (1) specialty and am slowly learning just like you are!

With that in mind, I would like to give some encouraging news--at least in my experience, wildflowers are already producing seeds in pretty big numbers! Just one milkweed seed pod gives enough seed for at least two or three seed packets (unless your seed packs are extremely generous), so collecting from a handful of plants can give a pretty good amount! Of course, though, I don't know how big the no-mow spaces you're thinking of propagating in are...

When it comes to learning how to collect seeds from specific plants, I usually hit up Google or YouTube and find a tutorial there. A channel I often find myself on for this stuff is GrowIt BuildIt--he has a playlist dedicated to all of his seed-saving videos that you may find helpful!

The Xerces foundation also has a downloadable PDF on their site that speaks extensively about a variety of seed collecting and cleaning methods which may be helpful as well! They talk about machine-collecting as well as hand-collecting.

I will say, though, that a general good rule of thumb is to try not to take more than 20-30% of what's present, so that the wildflower population in that location can continue on. Wouldn't want to wipe out chances of wildflowers growing in one location in order to propagate them elsewhere! Not to mention the various animals that feed on seeds in the wild needing some seed around as a food source. Maybe collecting along the edges of the property, along paths where any seeds that fall would otherwise get trimmed or mowed? That way the seeds in the middle of it all are left as-is!

I can definitely say that one of the general things I've learned is that oftentimes, seeds are ready to collect from plants when they're looking pretty fucking dead. The backs of a sunflower head turning brown, zinnia petals turning brown and brittle, tithonias losing all their petals and becoming spiky brown seedheads--if it's brown, it's time to go to town, in a sense.

Seeing as milkweed is My Thing, I just feel I should point out that there are many ways to harvest milkweed seed. Some people will put organza bags over seed pods that are forming, so that when they split open the seeds don't escape and stay in the bag for later collection.

I have no doubt that this works--if anything, I think it'd be fantastic! I just don't feel like buying a lot of organza bags, so instead I usually just put rubber bands on the seed pods if they look like they're gonna split soon--this keeps it from splitting all the way open, so you can come back later and get your seeds! This is my favorite method for saving milkweed in my backyard--one or two seeds will escape, but for the most part, all the seeds are kept intact!

Regarding getting the seeds without the fluff, there's a few methods. The fluff on them (called comas) is designed to allow the milkweed to float in the air, similarly to dandelions--so it gets everywhere. I've seen methods to put the seeds in a bag or bucket with a few coins and shake it around to dislodge the seeds, but honestly the most life-changing revelation was seeing this video sometime in high school.

A common milkweed seedpod is used in this example, but I've found it still works perfectly with other milkweeds I've tried it on. Usually I leave the center support in the pod and just press my thumb on it while brushing the seeds off, then shake them out.

At this rate! I have gone on about milkweeds way too long. But I hope this was helpful to you and others! If anyone else seeing this has special advice to give, by all means, go ahead!

NEW PROJECT SPAMS

do you guys wanna see the stuff I'm working on for my new animation I decided to do? well I can't hear you through the screen so I'll assume yes and also time for info dump (below, after the drawing, in case you don't care). TLDR version is I'm making a thing where some people go to mars. I think I finally worked out a descent module and the shit attached to it, which I'll info dump about in a sec for now look at my sub par 95% free handed scribbles (I'm too lazy to find a ruler but I used the edge of a book for the solar panels). I do plan to revise this I think but this is draft 1.

K so what the fuck is this. So I have some people goin to mars in my animation - a collab between future nasa and future roscosmos. I know I could literally make this look like anything and absolutely ZERO people would care but like I HAD TO PUT A LITTLE THOUGHT INTO IT OR I WAS GONNA DIE OK. I basically absorbed videos and facts on soyuz capsules until I started dreaming exclusively about plunging into a desert in a tiny metal box and then I figured it was enough and ok wait back up ej we gotta toss some background info out there.

Ok tldr I thought about this mission my people are going on bc even though I'm not gonna include all this exposition in the story, it helps me guide the design of shit bc I'm not that creative lol. The reason it looks so much like the soyuz is basically because in my story this spacecraft is made by Russia and the one thing I notice is that their designs don't really seem to change drastically over time. They're just like "yeah this works" and then they do that really fucking well forever and honestly I get it and this story only takes place 15-20 years in the future so I borrowed a bit

So just a high level overview. The characters are leaving from Earth in this much smaller spacecraft that will dock with a bigger space-station-like vehicle already in orbit around earth that actually does the bulk of the journey. Part of the reason for this is the trade off is a journey 6 months of horrible radiation, near-zero-g, and conventional fuel OR a better but scarier rocket and a much shorter transfer. I went with the better rocket - a nuclear rocket. They'll get there in 45 days but the trade off is if something goes wrong it REALLY REALLY goes wrong. Thus the reason they're not using nuclear rockets earlier to leave the atmosphere.

Anyway tldr they're docking with a bigger ship.

This is the thing they take up to the bigger ship from earth (minus the first couple rocket stages but I won't really be showing that part of the journey so I didn't draw them). There are a couple different parts. The round one is the orbital module bc i figure they'll be headed quite a ways away to dock with the main ship and theyre gonna need a place to hang out and live and whatever.

The next one and the important one is the descent module.

Now I did kinda like I said base this on the soyuz BUT there are some notable differences which you can see in action in the side of the image at the top of this post if you squint. Mars has a tricky atmosphere. It's really thin. I gotta admit like I really have no fucking idea how to design airfoils for this, much less a descent capsule. But I did read a couple papers/watched some gifs of boundary layer separation over airfoils or whatever and I looked at some of the reasoning behind why say the Mars science laboratory aeroshell and the ingenuity rotor blades are weird looking compared to stuff that's designed for our atmosphere. It boils down to it's just harder to generate lift (big shocker).

My guys would run into the same problem coming down in a capsule, but I made it so that it's a little wider/flatter and sharper than the current generation soyuz capsules. I also added more control thrusters to it because these people will have to get themselves out of the capsule and won't have help, so it needs to be oriented correctly. If they're tipping to one side and approaching some weird rocks or whatever, they can blast those things and right themselves a bit hopefully. Yeah having a thruster array on either side kinda fucks up the airflow but like I need these for the plot. More on that later. I mean maybe I don't. I'm still thinking about it. If I decide this is a stupid idea I won't put them there but like I said draft 1 no one roast me too hard

Other than that it's pretty boring. I've got a Massive parachute (though who knows how much help thatll be. ) and some retrorockets that start firing as soon as they get close to the surface to try and cushion the landing.

Oh yeah and the other part here is just the instruments/solar panels/main propulsion tanks/thrusters. This is necessary so the module can power up at the end of the journey after the big ship enters a low mars orbit. It'll separate from the big ship and then perform a braking maneuver to ultimately enter the atmosphere and land.

Anyway I'm sorry I know like .5 people care about these info dumps however I'm not sorry enough to not do it and it will happen again

||Overdue 2.1 Commentary (The Mess)

HSR Spoilers

I'll put it out here now I started 2.0/Penacony thinking I won't be emotionally attached to the characters. Do I like them? Yes, I do to the point I like to give my thoughts about them and their actions just like any other characters. Just not to the extent I would be having my heart strings snapped and used as a jump rope for H*yoverse as they revel in my suffering.

Everything about 2.1 story is still information overload for me so I feel like I'm still missing alot of stuff.

Minor stuff (1): Gameplay wise(?), I do like how they handled switching Character POV's and label it as Trailblazer Story Quest (yellow/gold plot icon). It did fee like they improved it from the beginning parts of Xianzhou main story where you had the option of playing Dan Heng side of the story (purple plot icon) even though it felt just as important main story wise. So that was nice to see.

Acheron & Welt

I'm not too familiar with HI3 and other game/stories relating to it. I can recognize a few references to it such as Acheron is definitely Mei in HSR universe, her Myraid Celestia Trailer is a reference to the Honkai invading "Earth"and the twelve blades are references to the Herrschers in order, and Acheron is a result of no Kiana(?) and she defeated/kill "Kevin"/End. So I cannot say much about any HI3 references between them other than the fact it was nice they met and somehow recognized each other secrets. It makes me think about again how lonely Welt must've felt seeing a familiar face but it's not the person he knows. At the very least Acheron can be someone he might be willing to talk to about his past. Keyword: might. Main story wise cause Penacony 2.1 so far (or overall since 2.0) is a detective-like story, their discovery of new clues in Sunday residence is very eye-catching when you confirm Sunday is aware of "Death" (the meme) and IT has been around for a long while. Robin and Firefly are not the first victims based on the notes, BUT it randomly attacks people anywhere at anytime with no pattern. Sunday himself is personally looking into this case, moreso since Robin is now a victim but he's discouraged and told to hold off on it by Old Oti (Alfalfa Family) until after the festival is concluded. Of course we also learn Sunday definitely loves his sister as he kept a Light Cone of her first performance when they were kids. But more interesting is Robin letter. We find out why her voice is different not because of health-related reason, but because of the "Harmony in Penacony is not pure". She knew something was going on in Penacony and came to the conclusion there is a traitor in the Family. She was going to join her brother and go over what information she had, but unfortunately as we saw at the end of 2.0 she got caught by "Death". :((( Also what I find interesting about Robin "voice" is that she's far more sensitive to the "Harmony" to notice something was wrong compared to Sunday, as we saw both siblings are capable of using Harmony power by a "voice". But so far I haven't seen Sunday confirm if he noticed anything wrong with his "voice" unlike Robin. Makes me wonder how close she is to Xipe...

Aventurine & Ratio (Aventurine Boss Fight)

This was like the big bulk of 2.1 story where Aventurine is pretty much the main character. I will admit it does feel weird we're getting to see alot of Aventurine backstory at once before getting to read his character story, but again- He's the star of the show here. We're seeing Aventurine making the biggest bet of his entire fucking life here. Starry did warn me beforehand his story will be tragic but I did not expect for a seven course dinner of tragedy and angst to be shoved down my throat. Because at the beginning with Aventurine and Ratio??? They were a duo who got along pretty well despite their contrasting personalities. It could be years of working together, or they're more alike than they admit. Also I love the sandbox pit, because it was so funny to watch a giant Ratio helping out this itty bitty Aventurine wandering in Golden Hour city replica. The NPC's T-Posing bothered me more than needed...As they should (T-Pose for dominance). Then the big fucking thing happened during the meeting with Sunday where Ratio "sold" Aventurine out and I was ready to throw my phone like: DAMN. But also I had to stop and think about it carefully, because ??? That isn't Ratio style. He can plot behind the scenes but that's for the sake of "students" to find a lesson to learn from it. Also! He would not risk people lives at that too and had a measure of safety net arranged. He's a Scholar who believes knowledge is for everyone and in all, a pursuer to find a cure for people "ignorance". Not play with people lives. Even if there is a chance he hates Aventurine, he wouldn't betray his own principles like that for greed. The obvious answer? Ratio "betrayal" is part of the plan. Aventurine obviously has a plan when Sunday interrogates him. Not going to lie, when Sunday pretty much put a death sentence on Aventurine, I was legit worried we were going to have another "death" happening. I will say I do admire Aventurine perseverance (HAH!) in trying to survive and fighting to the bitter end. And we do see! That his fight to live stems from his past from his childhood! His home planet is dying, his parents gone, his clan slowly dying off, losing his sister, sold as a slave, and eventually joining the IPC- Aventurine went through so much to survive! But we also see his survival comes to a price- the death of many he cares about. The guilt of being the only survivor combined with his sense of worth led to a disarray of thoughts we see in the quest description.

Unable to escape, unable to move on, unable to see his own worth, and unable to see his own future where he's still alive. In an illusion where he's facing his own selves, the past and the future as he marches onward, Aventurine came to find his own answer at the end: He wants to live. I'm still untangling stuff around the parts where Aventurine grand plan is to call a bluff for Acheron to unleash her true power and leaving a deep mark on the Dreamscape. I do know her power had effectively removed the Harmony placed on Aventurine thus saving his life from that. But the big point Aventurine had to Penacony regarding the "murders" happening is that: No one can "die" in a dream(?????). And it felt like he was taking a big risk with his life on the line to not only save his own life but to point to a bigger clue to the guests after the Watchmaker legacy: Who dunit? For Aventurine, his story has more or less concluded in Penacony. He's not dead despite it looking like he is accepting his "death" because again- You can't die in Penacony. I do know he'll return in the next story. And Dr. Ratio has full faith in his return, and it was??? Like I got chicken tendy that Aventurine looked relieved reading his note. Like there is someone waiting for him. BUT ALSO HE'S SAYING GOODBYE TO HIS PAST SELF TOO, I'M JUST AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. TLDR: Jade is not okay during the entire Aventurine portion of the story. I just wanted to cry and hold this bitch close, because this bitch is making me emotionally attached to him. AND HIS BOSS FIGHT WAS SO COOL. I was reminded of Childe Foul Legacy appearance with the beam shooting from his mask but Aventurine was his chest gem. Super nostalgic. I was just super bummed when I found out H*yoverse just nerfed his boss fight when I fought him. ;;w;; I really wanted to experience how hard he was based from what everyone was saying, but I guess that's what I get for taking my time. Though I guess they had to nerf it so people can continue the story.

Gallagher & Sunday

Gallagher background information about the Watchmaker. The tidbits I focused on is the fact Mikhail, who we've been hearing about since last patch, is actually the Watchmaker (Betrayer of the Family). If the Watchmaker title is inherited, and Mikhail is dead, who is the next Watchmaker? Is it Gallagher, one of his "children" or another individual? He never did explain, if he knows, how the Watchmaker are chosen. (I'm putting my bets on Misha because why not-). Minor Vent: When Gallagher answered the question of his age with "I'm Thirteen"- I prayed that social media peeps do not take it literally. Unfortunately, and I mourn for this, people did take it literally. Yes, you can disguise yourself in dreams, but come on. It's obviously means something else and how quickly, Gallaghter changed topics back to the original subject at hand before anyone can ask about it. The question remains that idk if it's been answered in-game or it's in other lore (Relics- I haven't read the Watchmaker relics lore yet because I haven't needed to grind that set yet): What did the Watchmaker do that was considered betrayal to the Family and earn their hatred? And what did they do for the Oak Family to have set them up to be branded as traitors? I haven't gotten a good grasp of Sunday character yet. The characters, except Robin, have a neutral to disdainful view of him. I can tell he manipulates to get things done for the sake of the Family, likes to be very much in control of the situation, and very much adores his sister Robin. But the confrontation between Sunday and Gallagher has me going unga bunga. The tension between them as Sunday reveals his suspicions about Gallagher, ripping apart his identity piece by piece to unveil a bigger puzzle. I thought it was another Sparkles disguise moment, or when Gallagher called Sunday "my brother"- I thought it was Robin and I was like HUH???? And then I realized it was something akin to mocking Sunday. Also Sunday calling Gallagher follower of Enigmata. I had to look it up because I was not too far into Gold/Gears/Swarm Universe to unlock the Aeon of Enigmata. Oh boy, that unlocks ALOT of possibilities for Gallagher. BUT ALSO GALLAGTHER AND DEATH MEME CONNECTION???? THAT LAST SCENE OF DEATH APPEARING AND STABBING SUNDAY? WHAT THE FUCK I GOT BLUEBALLED SO HARD AT THE CLIFFHANGER. Holy shit so Gallagher is definitely (99% likely now) one of the culprits here. The question does remain is: Who is Gallagher exactly? Because Sunday described so many pieces Gallagher had taken from 52 loyal members of the Family and made it into his own identity. What was the truth and lie he told us, the Nameless? And what did happen to Sunday??? Man. Oh Man.

Sam & Trailblazer

Man, I was like already 99% certain Firefly and Sam are the same people. But at the end where Sam revealed himself to be Firefly, I was the Trailblazer for that moment getting sucker punched into the gut. Like, Trailblazer had no breaks??? How long has it been since they saw Firefly got stabbed and disappeared, and shortly found out Robin was also stabbed? And then they had to be dragged all over Penacony to unveil the murders behind it? And then fight Aventurine??? Like legit they get no breaks and to find out Firefly, whom they consider a close friend and thought they were dead, is actually alive and part of the Stellaron Hunters? Man I would feel betrayed. I am curious to Firefly/Sam story though.

Minor tidbits to include:

-Sparkles answering Aventurine inquiry about the "mute" person that is not Robin, but somebody else. This is still stuck in my head. I'm just like: ????????????????????

-Baby Aventurine is too cute and pure for this world.

-Jade (I found HSR version of me everyone /j) is beautiful and I am willing to roll for her.

-Black Swan investigating Acheron! I wish this was explored more, but I know this will be a big plot in 2.2 since we heard Boothill voice! I'm curious to what kind of relationship Acheron has with the Galaxy Rangers. She is an imposter, but she continues to call herself a Galaxy Ranger. In Boothill case, he has a vendetta against her and plans to fight her. But also! It's confirmed Acheron did kill Duke Inferno and his children escape! And we heard Constance too!

-Also!!! My son Dan Heng makes an appearance...Over the Astral Express group chat asking if he needs to join them in Penacony and help out. ;;w;; Because everyone was worried about the Trailblazer not responding and obviously something serious happened. And Mom Himeko reassuring he's not needed for now, and Dan Heng trusting they'll let him know when they need him. ;;w;;

So, I got a buuuunch of new followers overnight, I think it was from the "unmedicated doesn't mean perfectly functional all the time" post or maybe the "you can't oppression olympics your way out of being traumatized" post? I'm glad to see that people like what I post, anyway.

Anyway. Hi. I'm Sparrow (ey/em, they/them.) I'm mostly a DS9 blogger, and that's the fandom I'm most involved in writing for, though you might occasionally see Dune, Mass Effect, Babylon 5, and other stuff too. I am a big fan of people getting absolutely fucked up in space. My main area of interest in DS9 fandom is the Dominion, and my main fanfiction project at the moment is Challengers, a several-decades-post-canon longfic (currently at slightly over 10,000 words) about Odo adopting and raising a young Vorta. This project explores the interplay of power and responsibility, as well as the harm done to both parent and child by the social insistence that children are the property of their parents, but my hope is that it's also fun to read. It's a work in progress and I try to update at least every few months, though my schedule is sporadic. If you want to be on a taglist for new updates, let me know and I'll add you.

I also have a Discord server for fans of the Dominion. It's relatively small, but it's active, and we have some good conversations in there. We're planning a prompt week in August!

Disability/neurodiversity related content isn't the bulk of what I post, or even a fraction, but it is something I have a lot of thoughts about. I keep most of them close to my chest unless I feel like others will appreciate them. I consider myself a psychiatric survivor and an ex-patient, I am unmedicated by choice, and I am for cognitive liberty and against policing the subjective experiences of others. Okay, let's take stock of where we are...

I'm playing Baldur's Gate 3, it's pretty nice. Meant to romance Karlach out the gate but tripped and fell into Gale's lap, whoops. What can I say, the man's a soft touch and I'm into it. Gnome paladin was a great choice, I look hysterical with a greatsword. Just swing me like a catapult at that point.

Starting another save in Pokemon Violet on Switch, just for the lulz. Shouldn't take me too long to run through it. Probably got a craving from having played through around this time last year.

Trying maybe for a second masters. It sucks being in a job you're bored at, so thinking of switching industries. I should enroll in classes for Spring and Summer. I forgot how much work a degree is. But my first class went very well.

Trying very hard to get pregnant, well, my wife is anyway. Please, please let us baby. We'd like a baby. And then it will be my turn to become pregnant. Not, like, immediately, but soon. We'd like a few kids.

In the process of redoing my whole closet. I have a lot of old, worn out things, stuff that doesn't fit anymore, and I asked for gift cards for Christmas, so maybe I can put together a whole new wardrobe. New wardrobe, new me.

Did change my haircut, no more two block situation, now more of a traditional pixie cut. Looks kinda cute c: We'll see how that goes. I haven't had symmetrical hair in awhile. I'm so silver these days 8C

Cooking better all the time. Can't wait to see what new recipes I master this year. I attempted steak last year and it's gone pretty well! Wish lamb was more available in this country, I love lamb so much. I'd cook with it all the time if I could. I really want to make moussaka one of these days, it's so tasty and, I think, achievable.

Utterly haunted by the basil ice cream we had on my birthday though. God. Fuck. It sounds odd but it was... rewrote my brain.

Maybe we'll get to move soon! Now that we've paid for all that fucking sperm, we can save up to move into an actual house! How neat! The housing market here is garbage, big surprise, but I've found a few nice, newer houses closer to my current work that are in a pretty decent school district. I may be seduced.

And just think, then I could get a Costco membership 83 The only thing stopping me now is I have literally nowhere to put all the bulk items I'd be buying. But soon... soon, precious. My wife has never been to Costco, she does not know its cornucopia of treasures. Ugh, I can't wait!

Don't know what I'll write next. I've been toying with trying to do some original work, but I've realized that in my long years of fanfic, my character creation muscles have completely atrophied. How do you all just make little guys? Like, you have to believe in them and care about them, and I'm always 'It has red hair and green eyes... I don't even know what it likes yet!' And then I panic and give up. I just need more practice, I'm sure.

comics: fire and stone is really good! i've read it once but just started rereading it. asshole human scavenger ends up stuck with grumbly old yautja, shenanigans ensue.

hunters has been good so far! i remember reading the first issue a while back but the rest of it hadn't been uploaded yet so i'm curious to see where it goes.

i think the numerous AVP comics might like, have a certain order? but i don't honestly know since I just read them based on Vibes.

Big Game apparently predates Hunters with the same human character, I literally discovered this while typing this ask because I /thought/ big game was the one shot about the yautja that fights a grizzly bear and loses.

Books: IF IT BLEEDS is a compendium novel of short stories that I only initially bought because the author of newsflesh had a one shot in it and i knew it would be good enough to justify the purchase if the rest of the book flopped. I am pleased to say it did not!

Concrete Jungle/Cold War are two stories that I got as one novel on the ebook version that are pretty good, too. It follows Dutch's brother. I can say that while I enjoyed them well enough, I don't see where I'd reread them, while I was already thinking about rereading If It Bleeds, and for me rereadability is important for how good I judge a book on.

The Rage War has also been so good. I was hesitant because I get Weird abut new authors, even if it's for a franchise I enjoy but it's been good as hell for lore stuff. Videos/Films: BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE, Predator: Dark Ages is a fan film that, frankly, had no right to be as good as it was for being independent and fan made. This One I recall being fine, IIRC it has yautja killing nazis and we always like to see nazis get killed.

For Build-A-Boy purposes i highly suggest checking out the studioADI youtube channel, they've done the bulk of the VFX across the franchise, lots of the OG's at ADI worked under Stan Winston. I like seeing the VFX portion because I'm super into creature creation and in another life would probably be doing it for a living, but it may be helpful for figuring out what kind of design you want!

There used to be a really cool behind the scenes doc for the original movie, I'll have to look and see if it's even still up because it has not only a lot of stuff about the design but also so much stuff about fucking bonkers it was getting that movie made.

There's also been several games throughout the years, and I think Hunting Grounds finally got a PC port? it's a shame that word of mouth has said that game flopped but most of the people saying it are gamer bros so I take it with a grain of salt. I could honestly, care less about gameplay I'm here for making a Boy and then Killing People.

I get what you're saying and I don't mean to upset you by mentioning that you've gone and cherry picked a great example but might I request you broaden your scope slightly to perchance understand what the people saying tumblr is an echo chamber are actually talking about?

Because it goes beyond just "my mutuals have interests that I don't" and is closer to the fact that, yea no shit it's an echo chamber people are going to flock to people they agree with. This isn't actually the problem to be focusing on; the problem comes from the inaction that is taken when we never speak outside the echo chamber.

Alright listen sometimes I see a post that's like "hey signal boost this it's important" and I look at it, and it's basically a bunch of stuff like "hey trans people are people and deserve basic human respect" and I go "yea no shit dude, want me to show this to the 200 other people who agree with this so we can all agree with this and nothing will really come of it?"

Like that right there is "the problem" if there is one.

The idea of using "echo chamber" as a big scary buzzword is stupid.

Why do you follow the people you follow on this site? On a site with no visible follower counter, with no need for shit like "follow for follow" and bullshit like that.

You follow them because you likely agree with the bulk of what they're discussing; or because you enjoy the same shit they do; or because you found common ground.

Common ground is going to breed an "echo chamber" it's just that simple, you typically won't follow someone if they're spouting bullshit you don't personally believe in or agree with.

If I saw someone I was following being fucking racist or bigoted or whatever; I'm probably not gonna follow them for much longer. That does mean that if you ask any of my followers a question on a topic that matters, like the genocide in gaza, or anything about gender and sexuality, or even shit about race and racism. You're probably more than likely going to get the same if not very similar answers from all of them.

That's because we all agree on those sorts of important topics. However I follow people who blog exclusively about sentai shows from Japan, I follow people who blog exclusively about video games I don't personally play, I follow aesthetics blogs that show off a lot of aesthetics I may not care for among some that I do.

The idea is that I follow those people because they make their posts fun to see on my dash; it's something I may not be interested in but I do feel some of their interest rubbing off on me when they enthusiastically blog about the new episode of some Kamen Rider show I'll probably never see.

But if that same blog goes off saying some racist shit or something I'm just done man, that's it. There's a difference between having interests and shit that we don't agree on, and having important opinions on dare I use the words "social justice" and humanity as a whole that we disagree on.

I can handle someone I'm mutuals with blogging about shit I may not find as interesting myself, perhaps they're a friend, maybe I enjoy the aesthetic but not the thing; maybe I find some kind of weird amusement in seeing people talk about a certain tv show or something I don't care what it is, I can follow someone who likes something I do not.

Where the echo chamber comes in is when we start talking about bigger topics, more important topics; the sort of things that make you look at someone and go "...oh you think that?... like unironically? oh... okay..."

I don't think all my followers are into Mabinogi, Speedcore, and Ultrakill, but they likely have other things I blog about or enjoy that they also enjoy; or they might like me as a person. That's perfectly valid, but I assure you we more than likely have the same or similar views on racism, on gender, on sexuality, on trans rights, on cops, and laws, and the genocide.

THAT is what people mean when they say "tumblr is an echo chamber" we curate our own experience, we only really follow people we like and agree with and that's fine there's literally nothing wrong with that.

The biggest problem this causes if any, is that very often you're not getting the word out and convincing anyone who disagrees with you of anything you are trying to. There's times when mutual aid and signal boosting works because it's about raising awareness to help a cause most people agree with within a circle. That's fine, that's great!

However if you're trying to get word out to people who may not be aware, or who may not agree at first glance, if you're trying to convince someone of something; or show someone something new. It's unlikely to "breach containment" as they say. If the people who follow me have the same views on gender and sexuality that I do, then me reblogging a thing about gender and sexuality isn't going to bring a new perspective to someone who thinks differently, it's just going to reaffirm those beliefs for the people who agree with me. Again there's nothing inherently WRONG with that, but it's not like twitter where people who disagree are likely to see it and maybe be swayed by what it's saying.

This actually is a case where unless you're specifically going out of your way to follow and try to become mutuals with people who you specifically disagree with on important topics; yes the experience is universal; because the experience is human.

If you're not intentionally following people who disagree with you, then you are in some way shape or form participating in an echo chamber, congratulations it's not that deep.

It's ironic that this post has as many notes as it does, because it means that at least a couple thousand people have "not had this universal experience of being part of an echo chamber" and if you can't rationalize why that's ironic and funny for yourself I'm not going to be demeaning and rude about it; I'll just explain it.

This post in and of itself is trying to say "maybe you all participate in an echo chamber but some of the people I follow and am mutuals with like things I do not and therefore the experience is not universal" and yet thousands, THOUSANDS of people have reblogged this; they have felt that way; there are thousands of people who are saying the same thing and the same thing is about saying how different they are.

This is similar to when being hipster became so mainstream that hipsters didn't know how to be hipster because the idea of being hipster was about not being mainstream and being hipster had become the new fad.

People really view things as extremes, they think being part of an echo chamber is necessarily inherently bad, it's not. It's just part of being human. If you look at all my closest friends they'll all have a lot in common, one of the main things is that they're either trans or they support trans individuals; you'll notice most of them are gay or support gay individuals; you'll also notice that they all listen to different music, enjoy different games, enjoy different media and hobbies and have different interests; and yet if you sat the lot of us in a room together and go "Cops good?" we would all go "no cops bad actually" and suddenly that IS an echo chamber. BECAUSE THAT'S HOW HUMANS WORK, we flock together with those of similar mentality and beliefs.

Like I'll be real, I teeter on the edge of pirating games whenever and usually don't opt out for any "We gotta support the big company" motivation and more out of convincing myself "I don't actually need to play that, it's fine." and doing something else with my time.

But worth mentioning, one of the quickest ways a game can convince me to not buy it and instead debate on pirating it is to have the most fucking obscure and messy means of fucking BUYING the damn THING.

I'm talking 50 different editions, I'm talking "We split up the content into mini DLC packs because we value player choice! (ignore the fact that this means in order to get a normal game's worth of value you actually spend like 200 bucks)", I'm talking whatever the hell modern Hitman games have been doing with their pseudo seasons (3 different games) and the fact I can buy "the new one" for 30 bucks but that actually just gets me some of the old stages from hitman 1 and 2 (the modern ones).

Hell that last one is the reason for the post, I fucking LOVE modern hitman, due to sales and rash decision making I got most of hitman 1+2 on console forever ago and I adore the gameplay.

So it would be reasonable to assume that hitman 3, oh, sorry, I mean "Hitman World of Assassination" is on my radar and that I do indeed want it especially now that more content has dropped for it as I know the weird season format would cause it to be a more reasonable purchase later rather than at launch.

And I understand that as I'm looking to get it on PC instead of console I'm gonna have to rebuy old stuff, whatever.

Now why the hell is this game 100 bucks to actually get the game as it should be, but I have the option of spending 30 for 'some' old content or 70 bucks for "everything except what we decided to strip out to convince you to spend 30 more bucks" and all of this is on a game that released nearly 3 years ago and has the bulk of its content being from 2016 and 2018.

and all of that stinks more when modern hitman is already a game series with warts, it's so fucking fun to play but it's also a new trilogy strapped with always online bullshit for no good reason and fomo content that never comes back for some reason (unless they finally decided to reintroduce those limited time hits).

It's such a weird fucking thing. Just charge me a normal price for it and give me it and take your fucking money, I'm not dealing with that weird 100 buck mess.
